This is a story of a village road.
Once it was a proper road, but for decades the situation has been wretched. The narrator and the villagers suffer when the road breaks down cars and people, and the common opinion does not side with the village of Kurjala either, perhaps because of the name (Kurjala means a place of misery in Finnish).
The villagers decide to organize a demonstration to show that the life in Savoian hill village is not so wretched after all, especially if the road would be fixed. Members of the Finnish parliament are transported to the village, the safety of the children and cottage owners is appealed. Finally, the state decides to give 1,2 million euros as a Christmas gift for the fundamental improvement of the road.
The road gets fixed. It is black and flat.
But turns out that the narrator gets lost and can’t find a way to her home village. Where does the renewed road lead to?
