Women’s choices and the demands of mothering are cramped into the Sand Eye’s chamber. What is said and what is left unsaid? Is the sand salvation, hope, love or death? As the sand fall into the room the relationships of the main characters are molded anew.
Depicting the characters’ emotions has been my most important goal: Ruut’s wish to be loved, and Helene’s pain about the demands of motherhood which she cannot fullfill.
Composer Sanna Ahvenjärvi
I’ve been interested in the social and personal reasons and effects of regret, anxiety and depression. Things effecting on women’s life, like the possibility or the impossibility to reproduce, are worth an opera. Still family-oriented works are labeled easily as “feminine”, even though a female person is above all a person and a family with it’s many forms the basic unit of the society.
